TRC Residents Focus on Their Nutrition

As a part of the health & wellness component of supportive services, many residents have found their nutrition groups to be helpful in their everyday lives. From diet to exercise, the nutrition group features informational sessions that help residents start small with a dieting plan for beginners, grocery shopping for healthier items, managing diabetes & hypertension and more.

It helped me a lot, because I’m a diabetic and it made me more aware of reading nutrition labels. I used to never do that, you know? But when she explains the importance of it, it makes sense.

Residents have found this 12-week curriculum incredibly helpful as they transition to a self-sufficient lifestyle. The nutrition group is popular among the residents, learning about nutrition and healthy eating has become a fun activity rather than a chore. In some classes, many of the residents learn to make recipes that are good for you and still taste delicious!

We learned how to make this no-bake low-fat cheesecake recipe that was very delicious. Overall, the class is incredibly helpful! We learn how different foods affect our bodies and different recipes we can make that are healthy and fun

Helping residents take back control of their health and wellness is crucial step in the road to self-sufficiency. As many of our residents have experienced homelessness or substance, it becomes even more critical to reeducate individuals on their health.

Health is incredibly important to address, it goes unattended for individuals without housing because it isn’t necessarily on their list to accomplish. To be able to help individuals understand the impact that neglect has had on their lives and how to attain sustainability so that they can move towards self-sufficiency, which is one of the things TRC is focused on.
