Intergenerational Development Name Survey

The Renaissance Collaborative, Inc. (TRC) and Housing Opportunities and Maintenance for the Elderly (HOME) have formed a partnership to create an intergenerational residence on 53rd and Calumet, kiddie-corner to TRC’s Senior Village 1.

The Senior Village concept was conceived in 2004 as a response to TRC’s community forums and the growing population of seniors living on the South Side of Chicago, particularly the rising numbers of seniors who are raising their grandchildren. TRC endeavors to promote seniors’ ability to age in place in a supportive environment that accommodates their diverse and changing needs.

The key goals of this development are:

  1. To create an attractive and innovative living environment for low-income seniors

  2. Support seniors who are primary caregivers of dependents, aka “GrandFamilies”

  3. To develop a multi-generational space that invites broader community participation

In planning the programming and design of this building, TRC seeks to ensure that the Senior Village will create a truly supportive and enriching environment for seniors and children alike.

Patricia Abrams, TRC’s Executive Director, has spearheaded this project since its inception. She used her sabbatical to conduct extensive research: examining similar housing, holding interviews and focus groups with grandparents in the community, and exploring innovative models in areas such as wellness, mental health, and education.

Once finished, this development will stand as a model for other agencies to learn from and replicate for the benefit of communities everywhere.

Two options for the name of the building have resulted from TRC Board Feedback and we want the community to choose the final name! Please submit the Google form on this page to let us know your thoughts.
