Friendraiser Discussion Recap

Every year TRC hosts a “Friendraiser” with the goal of inviting members of the community to join TRC in the work that we do and share our mission.

On February 23rd, TRC hosted a panel discussion titled “The Next Great Migration” with three experts who gave us an insight on the structural causes behind why Black people are migrating out of the city of Chicago at such an alarming rate.

Our panelists included: Dr. Stacey Sutton, Dr. Lionel Kimble, and Professor Cheron Corbett. Each panelist had their own unique background to give us different insights into this phenomenon.

Over 60 people were in attendance where we discussed the structural mechanisms behind this migration. Some key takeaways from the discussion included the importance of Black political power; how Chicago serves as a beacon for Black political leadership & thought, and the importance of urging Black politicians to vote for policies that uplift Black communities. Critical investments that focus on neighborhood revitalization such as the Invest South/West initiative were also part of the discussion.

We also have to understand community wealth-building, cooperatives, shared housing, and community land trusts are tools that been working for decades and now there is a renaissance of where more cities are saying ‘there are things we can do to keep our land affordable and in our communities
— Dr. Stacey Sutton

Our Friendraiser was a remarkable success as we were able to foster a great conversation about preserving and growing our Black population. If you missed it, be sure to watch this enlightening discussion on YouTube!
