Recognizing Our Residents

Every year, TRC hosts a ceremony where residents are recognized for their hard work and progress towards self-sufficiency. The award categories and recipients are carefully considered through the supportive services team.

The highest honor a resident can achieve is the Abrams Apple Award, named after TRC’s founder and executive director, Patricia Abrams. This award is given to an individual who has “made extraordinary global progress towards the goal of self-sufficiency”.

This years Abrams Apple Award recipient was Marquitta Nelson. The decision came after the previous recipient of the award (Sean White) suggested that she win this year’s award. We interviewed Marquitta in 2019 and heard her inspiring journey towards self-sufficiency.

During the award ceremony Marquitta shared with Renaissance residents her gratitude to God and TRC for giving her a second chance at life. She also mentioned how she was determined to not go back to her old life of substance abuse and prison and encouraged the residents to keep working hard towards their goals. Marquitta is well on her way to self sufficiency as she now has her an apartment which she’s proud to call her own
